SANVAL (Ambien) is a short-acting hypnotic that binds to the same receptors as a benzodiazepine and is prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. Its hypnotic effects are similar to benzodiazepines, but it is considered a class of sedative drugs called imidazopryidines.

SANVAL binds to GABA receptors and can cause amnesia, delusions, altered thought patterns and impaired judgment. Reports have linked episodes of sleepwalking and related strange and dangerous behavior to SANVAL. An analysis of the controlled clinical trials, showed little difference between SANVAL and benzodiazepines in terms of sleep onset or duration, quality of sleep, adverse effects, tolerance, rebound insomnia, daytime alertness or physical dependence.

Some studies show that SANVAL may alter the sleep architecture in the same way that benzodiazepines do -  by reducing the amounts of restorative Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and increasing the non-restorative sleep patterns. This can result in daytime drowsiness and poor cognitive function. Therefore only short-term use of SANVAL is recommended and discontinuation should be with a gradual dose reduction.
