BUPROPION - (Wellbutrin, Zyban)

side effects and withdrawal symptoms

BUPROPION is an atypical antidepressant that acts on the norepinephrine and dopamine receptors, but also reduces the neurotransmitter that works on the peripheral muscles extending from the central nervous system (consisting of the brain and spinal cord) to limbs and organs and the central nervous system. BUPROPION belongs to a chemical class that is similar in structure to amphetamines, but with compounds that also act on other neurotransmitters.

Seizures are the most controversial side effect of BUPROPION, and were responsible for its removal from the market in 1986. But the risk of seizures was found to be dose-dependent and BUPROPION was reintroduced to the market in 1989 with a maximum recommended dose of 450 mg per day.  In 2006, BUPROPION was the fourth most prescribed antidepressant in the United States.

However, due to its anticonvulsant properties, stopping BUPROPION should be done with a gradual dose reduction (also known as tapering), combined with specific nutritional products to support the body and the brain during the withdrawal process.

BUPROPION like all drugs depletes the body of essential vitamins, minerals, and Glutathione (the body’s master antioxidant), and alters Melatonin production, which is critical for normal sleep patterns. Glutathione is essential for a healthy immune system and the detoxification process. Low Glutathione levels are associated with immune and liver dysfunction, cardiac disease and premature aging. Dr. Jimmy Gutman describes Glutathione as “Food for the Immune System.”  Replenishing the body of critical Glutathione levels not only to help improve immune function, but also allows the body to detoxify naturally.

The POINT OF RETURN Withdrawal Program was specifically developed to address the extensive depletion issues caused by BUPROPION, while also providing support to the body and brain during the withdrawal process.

  • POINT OF RETURN workbook provides safe physician written tapering guidelines that minimize the withdrawal symptoms. The book also provides potential Interaction Items to remove from your diet for BUPROPION.
