ATIVAN is a short to medium-acting benzodiazepine tranquilizer that has sedative/hypnotic, amnesic (memory disturbance), anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant qualities. Since 1971, ATIVAN has been primarily prescribed to treat the symptom of anxiety. However, a study performed in Göttingen Germany, concluded that compared to other benzodiazepines, ATIVAN has a high addictive potential. Also, the potent amnesic effect makes it less desirable for daily use as it can impair memory. The efficacy for the use of ATIVAN in treating anxiety is greatly diminished within a few months, requiring dose increases to maintain effects.
ATIVAN, like all benzodiazepines, alters the sleep by reducing the amounts of restorative Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and increasing the non-restorative sleep patterns. This can result in daytime drowsiness and poor cognitive function. ATIVAN also depresses the tone of respiratory muscles, leading to sleep apnea.
Because severe withdrawal symptoms can occur from standard doses after short-term use, anyone taking ATIVAN should discontinue through slow and gradual dose reduction. Coming off long-term ATIVAN use may be more realistically achieved by switching to Diazepam for the withdrawal process. The dose reductions are felt less acutely as Diazepam has a longer half-life than ATIVAN, thus minimizing the breakthrough anxiety during the withdrawal process.
ATIVAN depletes the body of essential vitamins, minerals as well as Glutathione (the body’s master antioxidant). Glutathione is essential for a healthy immune system and the detoxification process. Low Glutathione levels are associated with immune and liver dysfunction, cardiac disease and premature aging.
This may explain why prolonged use of benzodiazepines can severely compromise our health.
